Looking at collections: A Deckchair Theatre Workshop

Ever thought about what to do with all those papers you have managed to amass over the years? What if some of them were significant?

The aim of this workshop is to explore what makes a collection important by showcasing heritage items from one of the most unique theatres in Australia, the Deckchair Theatre.

After 30 remarkable years, the multi-award winning Deckchair Theatre brought down the curtain for the final time late last year.

Its incredible collection contains scripts, audio and video recordings, posters and flyers, administration records and even a model stage set-up! Come and learn more about it and its value to the local, national and international community.

It just might make you wonder about what you have tucked away!

Looking at collections: A Deckchair Theatre Workshop, rear room 1.30pm – 3pm Sat 8 Nov. Reception Room, City of Fremantle (access via stairs in Kings Sq)

Newsletter Index 1994-2004

The Fremantle Society Newsletter index has been developed to make the articles in the newsletters more accessible for researchers of Fremantle’s History. A print copy is available at the History Centre at Fremantle City Library. Staff can assist with searching the print copy or an electronic copy.

It is indexed by name, subject, place and article. Also included is a list of events which have been organised by the Fremantle History Society and a look at this list certainly demonstrates the range of topics and places the society has highlighted over the years. Also listed are the committee members for the last twenty years.

An electronic copy is available here. Index 1994-2004

Upstairs Bar, The National Hotel 98 High Street, Fremantle 6160 DATE: Monday 15 September 2014

TIME: 5.30pm for 6pm

TOPIC: Off to War: Images and Imaginings from World War One

WITH: John Dowson COST: Gold coin donation John Dowson, photographic historian, will discuss images from his new pictorial book, Off to War: WWI 1914-1918, due for release in October.

John’s new book extensively uses original photographs and posters to allow our imaginations to appreciate how over 400,000 Australians went to war 100 years ago in the “War to end all wars.” Although cameras were banned in many situations, there is ample photographic evidence of how Australians were recruited, trained, embarked and convoyed across the oceans. And, propaganda posters played a key role in promoting morale and ‘moral’ behaviour. Background: John Dowson has written five books on Fremantle and one on Albany. He has been a history and English teacher all his life, in Perth, Sydney, the USA, UK, and France. He has lived in the West End of Fremantle near the National Hotel for 24 years. Drinks will be available for purchase in the Upstairs Bar

Introduced by Dr Lise Summers, President, History Council of Western Australia
